Review; Amaxa by Amaxa

Here is a fine little album from a never heard before (to me) band called Amaxa. The band hails from Sweden which as we all well know, is the mecca for great music.

“Amaxa builds the music around the riff as the starting point of a song. From that first riff it´s an organic process forward until a finished song sees the day. The music has also improvisational elements and a jazzy attitude.”

Going by that bio I had to listen to make sure. Yep. Their self titled album is a nice warm and retroy sound without getting super heavy or psychedelic. It would be unfair to call them psychedelic blues without thinking fellow countrymen Graveyard. They do pocess a little bit of that in them but they don’t take it to the extreme like Graveyard does. They do mix it up a bit. “Shooting Star” for example, leans more towards a Baby Woodrose sound. “Welcome In Sanity” leans more towards a deeper and darker tone. The closing song “Afterglow” mashes up some of that psychedelic rock with some kick ass organ. It gives it a nice little chilling feeling. It’s dark but yet not doomy.

Amaxa is a pretty diverse band as far as style. They’re not afraid to mix up different styles but yet stick to one central sound which basically is retro rock rooted in the 70′s. This is one that you need to check out. Listen to the album on the player below.
