Review: Red Sun God EP by Deadweight

I first found out about this band through the most excellent Ripple-Effect’s comp album. They had a song on there (“Cosmic Lunch”) that just blew me away. A little research and contact on Facebook and here we are. One of the better EPs I’ve heard this year.

The EP opens up with the excellent song “Lady.” It’s a classic rock throw down which sounds like something The Black Crowes would come up with. “Cosmic Lunch” is another classic rock song which implements a lot of sound inspired by Jimi Hendrix. “Stone Frog” has an awesome foot stomping beat and heavy riffs. “Silver Buckle” channels some Jim Morrison. The way the song is played and the tone reminds me of the classic Doors song “Five To One” right down to the punchy bassline. Listen to a live cut of the song and you’ll see. “Astro Cannibalism” is a fast and furious song with lots of fast moving riffs. The band really unleashes themselves on this song. This is the headbanger’s song on this EP. “Gannymead” is the last song. It opens with a deep and mesmerizing riff that sets the tone for the rest of the song. Mountain comes to mind with this one.

The band really flexes their influences on here. The classic rock sound topped with a more modern stoner rock and heavy psych twist is pure sweetness to the ears. This is one that you can wrap yourself up into and set it on repeat all night. I’ve listened to it at least a dozen times so far and it has yet to grow old on me.
