Review: Zebras by Zebras

I tend to listen to certain types of music in little kicks or spurts. One week I’ll listen to doom metal, the next classic rock, etc and etc. Every now and then I look for something a little different than what I’m used to.That was solved for me recently when I was sent the latest LP from Zebras.

Listening to the album, it was really hard for me to pinpoint an exact genre. That can be a bad thing sometimes but not in Zebra’s case. This album is all over the place. One minute you have a fast punk/thrash song, the next is a bit sludgy. Some songs are a mix of experimental and even a little shoegaze. The opening song, “The Dying Sea,” is a sludgy and doomy song. Again, all over the place but I liked that. It was nice to have a fresh style of music pop up into your playlist. The nice break up in styles is cool too because it doesn’t get boring. There is no sense of “the same song, different track.” It was heavy enough to wet my appetite with enough oomph to keep my adrenaline pumping throughout.

Even though these guys are from Madison, Wisconsin, their sound is pretty represented of what you would hear from bands from Portland and surrounding areas. They’re the type of band that, if they were from that area, would most likely be signed to Good To Die Records. I hope that can give you a bit of an idea before you’ve had a chance to listen. Zebras is out now on all types of formats. Click on the Bandcamp player below to listen and even purchase your own copy on Cd, vinyl, Cassette or digital.
