Review – Passing Through The Mastery Door by Mamont

Earlier in the year Mamont released a 3 song EP. They were featured here and shortly afterwards, It was made known that they were working on a full length. I didn’t know it was going to be so quick but the time is almost here.

The opening track, (name) is a fuzz heavy instrumental track. That rolls right into (song) which is sung in their native tongue. It’s sound is amazing. It’s fuzzy, ambient, and somewhat psychedelic. “Creatures” is a heavy rock song that is a throwback to some of the great rock music of the 70′s. It’s like a mix of some of the softer but yet better Black Sabbath and Mountain with a bit of Foghat. “Blind Man (Part III)” is next. It’s my favorite song on the album (Part II was on the EP released through Bandcamp earlier this year). It’s a nice little jam song at times with a bit of a heavy psych side to it. When the lyrics are being sung, it kinda reminds me of something from The Moody Blues. “Stonehill Universe” is mostly a fuzzed out and heavy instrumental song. It’s pretty badass within itself. “The Secret of the Owl” is another baddass song. It’s somewhat heavy, a bit fuzzed out. The guitars really groove on this one and hypnotize you all at the same time. “Woods” slows things down a bit. There’s a harmonica and acoustic guitars in this one. It gives it a bit of a western feel. It’s a mellow and relaxing song. “Satans Fasoner sends the album off in style with it’s fuzzy tone and warm feel.

This is a fine release by the band. They really didn’t stray to far off from the sound of the EP. I’m not sure if it’s because all or most of the songs were written at the same time or not. It may or may not be. It doesn’t matter though, this is a quality album from start to finish. It’s some of the best use of fuzz mixed with desert and psych rock. For fans of the Truckfighters, this may be the best album they never recorded. Ozium Records will be releasing this one very soon so keep your eyes and ears peeled.
