by Ian Gerber for The Soda Shop
When I was in high school there was a definite line between the punks, the metal heads, and the stoners (that is to say the burnouts who dug The Doors a lot more than the average rock fan). They didnʼt play nice together. Every time I flew a flag for one team or the other (ftr, I was never much of a punker) I was a little terrified that the opposition would call me out for it.
Certainly arrogant and colorfully stoned social sub-groups could just get along and throw a fucking righteous party, right? Guess what? They did…and I have found it. The house band was mighty high. They are also called Mighty High.
Blending only the dirtiest and most kick ass elements of hard rock, metal, and punk, Brooklynʼs undisputed kings of ʻregressiveʼ rockʼ have been blasting it out like the infested, bastard spawn of Lemmy that they are for the past decade.
Mighty Highʼs newest record, ʻLegalize Tres Bagsʼ, deserves a spin at any house party that has a record player. The albumʼs production is top notch due to a fine mixing job from engineer Jason LaFarge (Swans, Chica Libre) and Ripples musicʼs go to mastering engineer Tony Reed. Every trashy guitar sound and shouted vocal melts out of the speakers. I suggest purchasing the vinyl LP version of the record. Iʼm sure I could only appreciate the sentiment of “I Donʼt Want to Listen to Yes” or “Come On! Iʼm Holdinʼ” that much more: not to mention Wayne Bjerkeʼs album art should be fully appreciated in its LP form.
ʻLegalize Tres Bagsʼ is now available on Ripple-Music. If you think that partying until you puke is a stupid idea, then this record is not for you, but youʼd still probably think it rocks because fuck off, it does. Get the fiver your bud owes you (and a couple more) and go pick it up.
Now the good part. The Soda Shop and Ripple-Music have teamed up to give away 1 copy of the CD. All you have to do is comment below what you thought of the album. If you haven’t heard it yet, listen to the 3 songs above that are from the album and leave your thoughts. One winner will be picked at random to win the CD. You have until 11:59pm Eastern Standard Time (EST) on Sunday the 23rd.

Having not heard the full album, but familiar with other Mighty High outings, I totally dig what I’ve heard. I hope I win the contest.

I really dig “In Drug City”, and this new album seems really good. Stoner ‘n’ roll, I’d like to play it at a toga party.
